If your brand shows up when people ask ChatGPT a question, that visibility can vanish faster than you think. Between August 14 and 17, 2026, Reddit's share of citations inside ChatGPT Search collapsed from an average of 3.83% to just 0.52%, a relative drop of about 86% in a matter of days. The data comes from Promptwatch, an AI visibility platform that tracks millions of responses across the major AI systems, and it is one of the clearest examples yet of how fragile AI search visibility really is.

What actually happened to Reddit's citations

For months, Reddit was the most-cited source across AI answer engines. Its threads, reviews, and lived-experience posts are exactly the kind of content large language models love to quote. Then the numbers cracked. Promptwatch logged a first warning on August 8, when Reddit's share slipped from the high 3% range into the mid 2% range. Six days later, on August 14, the floor gave way, and by August 17 Reddit was sitting near half a percent.

The timing lines up with a change in how ChatGPT Search handles what engineers call query fan-out, the process of breaking one user question into several background searches and deciding which sources to pull from. Promptwatch is careful to say the data shows when the shift happened, not why, and it cannot fully rule out a collection issue. But the pattern is dramatic and sudden in a way that gradual data noise rarely is.

A tale of two algorithms

The contrast with Google is what makes this story matter. On Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Reddit citations also declined over the same window, but slowly, drifting from around 2.5% in early July to roughly 2.1% in August. That is the kind of gentle erosion you can plan around. ChatGPT's drop was a cliff, not a slope.

There is an extra twist. The collapse happened almost exactly as Reddit was being added to the S&P 500, a milestone that normally signals stability and mainstream arrival. Instead, it underlined how a company can be a Wall Street darling and an algorithmic afterthought at the same time, depending on who controls the pipes.

Why this is a wake-up call for GEO

Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is the new discipline of getting your content cited inside AI answers. Reddit's experience exposes its original sin, the same one SEO has always had: you are building on ground you do not control. When a single model provider adjusts how it selects sources, your visibility can be rewritten overnight, with no notice and no explanation.

For marketing, communications, and content teams, the practical takeaway is not to abandon GEO but to stop treating any one channel as a guarantee. If most of your AI-driven traffic or brand mentions flow through one engine, you are one algorithm update away from a very bad week.

What to do about it

Three moves make sense right now. First, measure your own AI referral and citation trends directly instead of assuming they hold steady; what happened to Reddit can happen to anyone, and you want to see it in hours, not quarters. Second, diversify where your content lives and gets referenced, across search, AI engines, communities, email, and owned channels, so no single source of citations is load-bearing. Third, build genuinely useful, original content that multiple engines want to surface, because durable authority survives algorithm changes better than optimization tricks.

The bigger lesson is about power. Whoever hands out the citations hands out the relevance, and today that power sits with the models, not with publishers. Reddit did nothing wrong and still lost 86% of its ChatGPT visibility in four days. Treat that as the new baseline of risk, and plan your distribution accordingly.
