This week the AI giants stopped competing on quality and started competing on control. OpenAI made ChatGPT free and unlimited as it crossed a billion users, Meta gave away a powerful open model while Zuckerberg published a superintelligence manifesto, China’s Kimi K3 got so good that Washington called it illegal, Meta pushed into prediction markets, and Anthropic set its sights on the largest IPO in history.

I’ve filtered out the noise for you

Five stories that actually matter this week, without the noise. Here’s what you need to know.

1. ChatGPT just went free and unlimited for everyone

OpenAI removed the daily text-message limit for free ChatGPT users and made GPT-5.6 Luna the default model, which produces 62% fewer factual errors than the previous version. The Think button also returned for reasoning through harder questions. All of this landed right as ChatGPT crossed one billion weekly users.

2. Zuckerberg is giving away powerful AI on purpose

On August 10, Meta released Muse Glimmer, an open-weight model of roughly 30 billion parameters that runs on a single laptop. The same day, Zuckerberg published a 6,500-word essay urging the United States to back open-source AI instead of restricting it. Meta added that it will also open the weights for Muse Spark 1.2.

3. China’s Kimi K3 is so good the US is calling it illegal

China’s Kimi K3, from Moonshot AI, is a 2.8-trillion-parameter open-weight model that now rivals the best from OpenAI and Anthropic. The White House accused Moonshot of distilling Anthropic’s Fable model and of reaching restricted Nvidia GB300 chips through Thailand. The Treasury is already floating possible sanctions.

4. Meta wants three billion people betting on the future

Meta is pushing a new app called Arena to enter prediction markets, going head to head with Polymarket and Kalshi. For now it uses a video-game-style points system rather than real money, which sidesteps regulatory oversight. The ambition is huge: Arena could bring betting on the future to Meta’s three billion users.

5. Anthropic is heading for the biggest IPO in history

According to the Financial Times, Anthropic is targeting a two-trillion-dollar valuation or more in a possible October market debut, which would be the largest IPO ever recorded. The company grew 800% in a year and is aiming for $100 to $120 billion in annualized revenue by the end of 2026. Morgan Stanley is leading a $15 billion financing round for its Texas campus.
