AI Insider: Why is Meta’s new AI already #1?

A new AI app just hit number one on the U.S. App Store, and it did not come from OpenAI or Google. It came from Meta. The app is called Muse, and ten days after launch it was the top free iPhone app in the country, ahead of ChatGPT and Gemini. The reason it climbed so fast says a lot about where AI is going, and why your customers will soon expect the same thing from you.

What Muse actually does

Muse is not another chatbot. It is a personal AI agent, which means it does not just answer you, it acts for you. Once you connect it to your apps and accounts, Muse can send emails, book dinners and reservations, track your budget, find deals, set reminders, manage scheduling conflicts, and even make purchases on your behalf. It follows up with people so you do not have to.

It plugs into the tools people already use. Connectors include Gmail, Google Calendar, Outlook, OpenTable, Google Docs, Spotify, and Plaid for banking, while Facebook, Instagram, and Threads link automatically. It is available in the U.S. on iPhone, Android, WhatsApp, and the web, it is free to start, and it has paid tiers at 20 and 100 dollars a month.

Why it shot to number one

Two things made Muse take off. The first is distribution. Meta can put a new app in front of billions of people through Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Threads, so it did not have to buy its way to the top of the charts. It reportedly reached number one with fewer downloads than ChatGPT needed, because the intent behind those downloads was so high.

The second is the shift from chatting to doing. People are clearly hungry for an assistant that completes tasks instead of just describing how to do them. Booking, paying, emailing, and following up are the boring parts of a day, and an agent that handles them is instantly useful in a way a question and answer bot never was. This is the same bet Meta made when it acquired the team behind the Manus agent, and it is paying off.

The catch, and what it means for you

Agents that act on your behalf also step on other companies' turf, and the pushback has already started. Just days after launch, Amazon blocked Muse from shopping on its site, a sign that the big platforms are not going to let a rival's agent roam freely through their stores. Expect more of these fights as agents try to click, buy, and book across the web.

For a business, the real signal is about expectations. Once millions of people get used to an assistant that books, buys, and replies for them, they will expect your business to be just as responsive. If a customer's agent can reach out at midnight, your slow reply the next afternoon will feel broken.

Build my free AI agent

That is the opportunity hiding in this story. The same technology that powers Muse can power the way your business talks to customers, answering questions, following up on leads, and booking appointments without a human waiting by the keyboard. The companies that put agents on their side of the conversation will keep up with customers who now have agents of their own.

Meta's Muse is worth trying just to feel what a capable personal agent is like in 2026. But the bigger reason to watch it is what its instant success proves: the market has decided it wants AI that does the work, not AI that talks about it.
