When you think of Shakira, you probably think of music, not machine learning. But this month the Colombian superstar put her name behind one of the most ambitious AI education efforts in Latin America, and the goal is bigger than any single hit record: teach one million women how to use artificial intelligence.

What the program actually does

Shakira's foundation, Fundacion Pies Descalzos, has partnered with Amazon Music, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and the training organization Laboratoria to launch a free program called AWS Entrena Latinas. The plan is to train one million Latin American women in artificial intelligence and cloud computing skills by 2028, starting with a first phase in Colombia aimed at students and mothers connected to the foundation.

This is not a vague awareness campaign. Participants take real courses in cloud computing and AI, and the women who finish the modules earn official AI certifications issued by AWS. Those certifications are designed to help them find actual jobs, both in tech and in the music industry, where these skills are increasingly in demand.

Why it matters beyond the headline

The numbers behind the push tell the real story. Today, women hold only about 26% of technology jobs, and the partners behind this program want to help move that number toward 50%. That is a massive gap, and it represents a huge pool of talent that the tech industry has struggled to reach.

For a region like Latin America, where access to high-quality tech training can be limited and expensive, a free, certification-backed program with Amazon's infrastructure behind it is a meaningful shot at closing that gap. As Patricia Sierra, director of the foundation, put it, education has the power to open doors and transform what is possible in people's lives.

There is also a smart strategic logic here. AI skills are quickly becoming baseline requirements across industries, not just in software companies. By training a million women now, the program is betting that demand for AI-literate workers will only grow, and that the people who get certified early will have a real advantage.

What it means for you

Even if you are not in Latin America, this is a signal worth paying attention to. When a global brand like Amazon pours resources into training a million people on AI, it tells you that AI fluency is shifting from a specialist skill to a basic one, like using a spreadsheet or sending an email.

For business owners and teams, the takeaway is that the talent pool for AI-capable workers is about to get much wider, and much more diverse. Companies that know how to tap into newly trained talent, and that make their own tools easy for AI-literate workers to use, will have an edge. For individuals, the lesson is simpler: the barrier to learning AI is dropping fast, and the people who start now will be the ones who benefit most.

Shakira lending her name to an AI training program might look like a celebrity side project, but it points at something bigger. The future of work is going to require AI skills, and the race to get a million more people ready for it has officially started.
