What Astra for Law does
Astra for Law pairs OpenAI's newest model with a dedicated legal search index that covers U.S. case law, statutes, regulations, court rules, and administrative decisions, with new material added every day. On top of the raw model, it adds instructions and context for legal analysis and writing, so answers are framed the way legal work actually needs them.
The numbers OpenAI shared point at why a specialized version matters. On a legal research benchmark from Vals AI, Astra for Law answered 54 percent of 200 questions correctly, compared with 38.7 percent for the general model using plain web search. That is a large jump, and it comes from grounding the model in real, current legal sources instead of the open internet.
Access is deliberately narrow at first. Select firms get it through a Trusted Access program inside ChatGPT and Codex, with an API to follow. Trusted Access includes privacy safeguards like zero data retention, which matters enormously in an industry bound by confidentiality. API customers including Harvey and Legora, two of the best known legal AI companies, will be able to build their own products on top of it.
Built to help firms, not replace them
It is easy to read a headline like this and picture AI firing lawyers. That is not what is happening here. Astra for Law is a foundation for law firms and legal tech vendors to build on, not a robot lawyer sold to the public. It speeds up research, drafting, and analysis, the slow and expensive parts of legal work, while the firm stays in control.
The confidentiality safeguards are the tell. OpenAI is not trying to go around law firms, it is trying to sell to them, on the terms a regulated profession requires. The goal is to make each firm faster and more accurate, not to remove the humans who carry the liability.
