A rare thing happened in the AI industry this week: some of its biggest names lined up publicly against one of their own. The CEOs of Microsoft and Palantir have argued that running open models inside a customer’s own data center is key to controlling costs, keeping data private, and staying in control of the stack.
This is not really a debate about safety versus recklessness. It is a fight over who controls the infrastructure of AI. Amodei is defending a market of a few closed, premium models.
