Voice AI has been promising to run customer service "soon" for years. At Starlink, soon has arrived, and the scale is hard to ignore.
15,000 calls a day, at production scale
Elon Musk said Starlink is now using Grok Voice, the voice system from xAI, to handle support and sales at full scale. According to the company, the system fields more than 15,000 inbound calls a day and fulfills over 3,000 orders a week across voice and chat. Reports put the share of issues resolved without a human around 70%, with sales conversion in the 20% range. Callers first started hearing the AI identify itself on Starlink lines back in mid-April 2026, and the rollout has scaled up from there. SpaceX absorbed xAI earlier in 2026.
It is worth being clear-eyed: these figures come from the company itself, and no independent audit of resolution rates or caller satisfaction has been published. Still, the scale of the claim is the story.
What makes this different from a demo
Plenty of companies have shown off an AI voice agent that can book an appointment on a stage. This is different. Grok Voice is handling real work, hardware diagnostics, replacement shipments, and brand-new orders, in a live environment with enormous volume. That is the leap vendors have been promising for years: not a polished demo, but a system carrying a meaningful share of a major company's front line.
What it means for support teams
If one AI system can absorb 15,000 calls a day, the math of staffing a support operation changes. The human role shifts toward the hard cases the AI cannot close, plus oversight and quality control. For workers in customer service, that is both a warning and an opportunity: the routine, high-volume calls are the first to go, while judgment, empathy, and handling the messy 30% become more valuable.
Whether or not every number holds up to scrutiny, the direction is clear. AI voice agents are moving from pilots to the front line. The businesses that learn to use them well, without losing the human touch where it matters most, will have a real edge.
