Microsoft has spent two years turning Copilot into the front door for its AI ambitions. This month it took the biggest step yet, relaunching Copilot as a single "super app" that bundles chat, coding, and autonomous agents into one experience. The most striking piece is an agent called Autopilot that keeps working even when you have closed your laptop and gone home.

What the new Copilot super app includes

The redesigned app pulls together four things that used to live in separate places. There is Chat, the familiar conversational assistant. There is Cowork, an agent that can carry out multi-step tasks on your behalf. There is Code, a new environment that lets anyone build apps, dashboards, trackers, and automations just by describing them in plain language, powered by the same technology as GitHub Copilot. And Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are woven in so you can move from a conversation to a finished document without switching tools.

The headline change is the rebrand of Microsoft's personal assistant, previously called Scout, into Autopilot. Autopilot is an always-on agent that Microsoft describes as a "digital teammate." Unlike a chatbot that waits for your prompt, it runs tasks in the background, even when you are offline, and it is billed by usage rather than a flat subscription.

Microsoft is not shy about its ambition here. "Just as Office defined work for the PC era, the new Copilot is built to define it for the AI era," said Jared Spataro, the company's chief marketing officer of AI at work. CEO Satya Nadella had confirmed the super app was in development two months earlier.

Why an always-on agent changes your workday

The phrase "works while you are asleep" sounds like marketing, but it describes a real shift in how these tools behave. A traditional assistant is reactive: you ask, it answers, and nothing happens in between. An always-on agent is proactive. It can watch your inbox, draft replies, schedule meetings, update a tracker, and follow up on a stalled thread without you starting each task by hand.

For sales and operations teams, that is the difference between a tool you visit and a tool that works for you. If your company already runs on Microsoft 365, this lands inside software you use every day, with no new vendor to approve. That reach is Microsoft's real weapon. It has the deepest enterprise footprint in the world, and many large companies only authorize their employees to use Copilot, not outside AI tools.

How it stacks up against rivals

The move is also a direct answer to competitors. Anthropic's Claude has pushed into workplace agents with Cowork-style features, and OpenAI has been building out ChatGPT for work. Microsoft's bet is that it does not need the single best model to win; it needs the best distribution, and Office gives it exactly that.

There is a catch worth planning for. An always-on agent that acts without being asked is only useful if it acts correctly, which means the guardrails, permissions, and approvals around it matter as much as the agent itself. Teams that get value from tools like Autopilot will be the ones that design clear rules for what the agent may do on its own and what still needs a human sign-off. The technology to automate the work is arriving fast; the discipline to automate it safely is the part you control.

If Microsoft is right, the daily experience of office work is about to change from opening apps and doing tasks to reviewing what your agents already did. The question in the headline is only half a joke. Very soon, the honest answer to "what does your Copilot do while you're asleep" may be "quite a lot."
