Cognition AI, the startup behind the autonomous coding agent Devin, is closing a funding round of around 1 billion dollars that would value it at roughly 47 billion. That is nearly double the 26 billion it was worth just three months ago, and the company reportedly drew close to 10 billion dollars in investor interest. The number says less about Cognition’s revenue today than it does about how hungry the market has become for AI agents that do complete work on their own.
The number behind the headline
The jump is steep. Cognition raised at a 26 billion dollar valuation in late spring, and now, one quarter later, investors are lining up at nearly twice that figure. The demand was so heavy that the round could close larger than 1 billion dollars. Part of the fuel is momentum in the sector: the reported 60 billion dollar acquisition of rival coding tool Cursor, which closed in August, sharpened investor appetite for anything in autonomous software engineering, and Cognition reportedly turned down an acquisition offer of its own less than a month before this raise.
The business underneath is growing fast too. Cognition’s annualized revenue reportedly climbed past 900 million dollars, up from 492 million in late May. That is real traction, but at a 47 billion dollar valuation, investors are clearly paying for where the category is going, not just where the revenue is today.
Why investors are paying for agents, not assistants
The signal in this round is the type of product being funded. Devin is billed as the first autonomous software engineer, an agent that takes a task and executes it end to end, not a copilot that suggests the next line of code. Capital is flowing toward agents that do complete work by themselves, and away from tools that merely assist. That preference tells you where the smart money thinks the value is: in systems that finish jobs, not systems that speed up a human doing the job.
There is also a lesson here about how this market is shaping up. In traditional software, one winner usually took almost the entire category. Cursor was the clear leader in AI coding, yet Cognition is still raising at an enormous valuation right behind it. The AI era is not following the old winner-take-all script, which means several strong players can thrive in the same category at once.
