Anthropic is preparing for a stock market debut that could rewrite the record books. According to the Financial Times, investors expect the AI lab to seek a valuation of two trillion dollars or more in a possible October listing, which would make it the largest initial public offering ever recorded. For a company that was a research startup a few years ago, the numbers are staggering.

The numbers behind a $2 trillion debut

A $2 trillion valuation would exceed every previous IPO on record. For context, SpaceX went public at a $1.77 trillion valuation in June 2026, and Anthropic is now positioned to surpass even that. The company filed paperwork with the SEC in June 2026, and the listing is expected as soon as October.

The momentum has been building all year. Anthropic’s valuation reached $965 billion in May 2026, surpassing OpenAI for the first time, and the company raised just under $100 billion from venture capital and sovereign wealth funds over the course of the year. One investor summed up the bull case bluntly, arguing that if Anthropic is growing 800% a year, then at the very low end it would trade at 30 times revenue, which would make it a $3 trillion company.

What is fueling the growth

The valuation rests on a genuinely extraordinary revenue curve. Anthropic’s annualized revenue surpassed $47 billion in May 2026, and it is expected to reach between $100 billion and $120 billion by the end of the year. Investors point to roughly 800% annual growth, a rate almost unheard of at this scale.

To support that trajectory, Morgan Stanley is leading a $15 billion financing round for Anthropic’s campus in Texas, a bet on the massive compute buildout the company needs to keep training and serving frontier models. The IPO, in other words, is not just about cashing out; it is about raising the enormous capital required to hold a lead in a business where compute is the primary constraint.

The risks that could complicate the IPO

A record valuation comes with record scrutiny. Anthropic faces pressure from the Trump administration and litigation from the Defense Department, and Commerce Department export controls forced the removal of its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models from certain markets in June. The company’s pricing also runs higher than several competitors, which creates cost sensitivity among customers just as cheaper open-weight models are getting good enough to matter.

There is a deeper strategic reading here too. This IPO is less about selling intelligence and more about buying the ground that intelligence runs on. The $15 billion Texas campus, the compute deals, the sovereign wealth money: all of it points to a race to own infrastructure, not just algorithms. In a market where the smartest model can be matched within months, durable advantage comes from controlling the data centers, the chips, and the capital.

For business leaders, the lesson is to watch where the money is really going. When the leading AI labs raise sums that rival national budgets to build physical infrastructure, it tells you the competition has moved from cleverness to capacity. The companies that win the next phase will be the ones with the resources to run AI at scale, and the ones that build on top of them will need to stay nimble as valuations, pricing, and access keep shifting.
